Focus on the season’s must-have: The Oversized Coat

The coat you buy for Autumn/Winter is without doubt the most important purchase of the new season. It is the piece you will be seen in the most and can make a statement that sets the tone of your wardrobe for the season to come. With statement coats in mind, we come to arguably the hero piece of the Sands and Hall AW17 collection, the Oversized Coat.
Whether in dusty pink or black tweed, this was the most cooed over item during our look book shoot for AW17. The model wanted it, the make-up artist wanted it and ever since with its distinctive silhouette it is one of the pieces that people pick up on the most.
This coat, with its cocoon like silhouette and exaggerated shoulders ticks many of the boxes for Autumn/Winter’s key trends. Designers from Jil Sander and Stella McCartney to Eudon Choi and MaxMara all showcased a more oversized silhouette this season. Importantly though, for all its style credentials and trend points this piece is also incredibly wearable and versatile. Although it makes a statement it is most definitely not shouty. The modern structure of its defined shape is softened by the understated elegance of its curved lines. These rounded edges ensure at once a sense of both simplicity and femininity, creating a feel that though structured is still relaxed.
Unlike many of the more structured coats around this season the Oversized is designed to be worn by you rather than the coat itself actually wearing you! Structure and statement aside the feel is effortless and can be worn a variety of ways. Note for example the wide collar – worn down as in the the lookbook it feels classic and tailored. However, pop the collar up and its stiff structure give a very modern funnel like shape that not only taps into the season’s love of all things utility but protects from the cold and wind without even needing a scarf.
In terms of what to wear with your oversized coat the options are endless. As with many of the other Sands and Hall styles the feel you go for may be dictated by the colourway you opt for. The classic black and monochrome tones of the Taylor Classic and Ashen Black lend themselves to a more monochrome palette underneath. That does not mean the look has to be overly conservative or feel less modern. Opting for high waisted ultra-wide leg trousers as I did in our shoot for the Taylor Classic gives a very current feel that is at once tailored and relaxed.
The key with all of these looks is balance. When creating an outfit with a more oversized piece it is important for one component of the look to be fitted. This helps keep a sense of shape and avoid wide boxy looks. For example, if opting for a chunkier knit on the top keep the bottom half slimmer either with skinnier trousers or even a skirt. Likewise, if you’re going for wide leg trousers create shape and a waist with a more fitted roll neck or fine knit on the top half.
While the lure of classic black as an undeniably timeless piece will always hold weight a fresh approach to your winter wardrobe with this season’s pastels will help brighten up the darkest days. Pastels were one of the biggest trends for A/W17 with everyone from Maxmara to Marni featuring macaron colours. Even Burberry created a “London Pink” version of their iconic trench coat.
In the pink and blue of ‘Pink Loden” and ‘Macey Sky” Sands and Hall have nailed two of the season’s most popular hues. The other big story for the season is “tonal dressing” which works amazingly well with both of these colours. While I opted for sharper whites underneath these pieces in our shoot, tonal dressing allows for a similar feel of continuity and simplicity without being as high risk on the dry cleaning bill!
Think dusty and darker pinks paired with nudes all in similar tones underneath the Pink Loden and even blue denim paired with blue/grey knits beneath the Macey Sky for a more everyday option. With this tonal look underneath such a statement coat you really will be wardrobe ready for AW17.
